Home Based Business Archives

jamesmann-headshotI know I say it far too often but the opportunity to work at home and make money online is so cool, as long as you’re willing to learn what’s needed to succeed, first. There is really no doubt that the Internet is one awesome way to earn extra income.

The real key to making money online is to find something that you’re knowledgeable about and if you love it, even better. It works for me in a number of niches that I can’t get enough of.

The thing is you need to love some that people spend money on. Loving walks in the park may not make you much money, however loving something like home gardening has potential as millions of people today are turning to gardening to save a bit of money.

Do You Have Typing Skills

When you put typing skills together with the Internet you have so much potential. If you also have the ability to write well you can be unstoppable.

Typing skills gives one the opportunity to make money typing for others:

  • Data Entry Jobs
  • Medical Transcription
  • Freelance Writing
  • Create PLR – Private Label Rights Articles

You may want to also check out Legit Online Jobs for a great opportunity.

Article marketing today is a great way to promote ones links and pages. It’s how I make my living actually and I’m not even a fast or accurate typist. I really have to use spell checking and grammar but I get the job done.

I Work Affiliate Marketing

So if you are like me and don’t have the best typing skill you may not want to look for ways to make money as a skilled typist however that doesn’t mean you can’t make money. My typing skills are not going to win me any awards as I use the backspace key far too much.

Instead of focusing on sites that pay for content I prefer to have my own sites and work with affiliate marketing in the areas of my hobbies and interests.

As many years as I have been typing I haven’t increased my accuracy or speed so I made a choice and learned about online marketing and affiliate marketing so I make my money today promoting other people’s products.

I have two places I make most of my income, 1) Amazon.com, and 2) Clickbank.com.

Amazon has so many categories that it would be tough to talk about something without being able to find something to promote from Amazon. Clickbank has 10s of thousands of digital products available for your visitors that you can earn money promoting.

Now I don’t have a passion for writing but I do have many passions that I write about and affiliate marketing makes it worth my while. When I am sharing fishing stories I link to books and products from Amazon as well as relevant ebooks from Clickbank.

Getting Traffic To Your Business

If you’re like me and already have a business you may want to take it online and start directing traffic to your business. I make money online directing people to my computer instruction and web design business locally.

Now you’re likely thinking you’re going to have to learn how to build a website or hire someone and maybe that’s not in the budget at this time. We all know times are tough. So…

… go with a blog. This way all you need to invest in is a keyworded domain name and a place to host your new domain. From there I would go with a WordPress blog.

I use GoDaddy.com to buy all my domains and for my hosting needs it’s HostGator.com all the way.

I stick with GoDaddy for my domains because they are affordable and I’ve had only positive experience there. The same goes for HostGator, they have only helped me and of course are affordable for the beginner marketer.

Blog About Your Hobbies To Make Extra Income

the happy hosting happy danceI love my hobbies and always wanted to be able to make money through my hobbies. Well today I am doing that and so can you.

I spend a fair bit of money on my hobbies and that’s kind of a prerequisite to blogging about your hobbies. If no money is spent it’s hard to make it. So step one in blogging is finding a market or niche that has money being spent.

Today I work from my home full time. It took a bit of practice being my own boss as it takes some dedication and determination to succeed online.

I have a passion for fly fishing and gardening but there are so many hobbies one can make money with like golfing, hunting cars, boating… the list is really endless. It’s just key that it has money being spent.

It’s Key To Learn How Make Money First

key to getting trafficMy first attempt at marketing online was NOT about my hobbies. It was about making money online and I failed miserably.

I soon learned I needed to learn what I was doing and spent some time and money finding out what would make me money.

Once I knew I needed to learn some things I headed over to Clickbank to look through the marketplace. That’s when I found  The Super Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner and my business started producing positive results.

It’s too embarrassing to say how much time I wasted before learning but take my advice today and invest some time and money learning how to make money. Rosalind will have you making money in no time.

Home Gardening Hobbies

We decided to start gardening to save money on produce from the grocery store and to even eat healthier as we would be organic gardeners, all we had to do was learn how.

Again it was back to Clickbank to checkout the marketplace for ebooks about gardening, specifically vegetable gardening. Now it’s one of my top websites and makes me the most money and has the highest pagerank.

In conclusion the time and money you invest at the beginning will make all the difference in the long run. Start buy purchasing and reading How To Be a Super Affiliate by Rosalind Gardner as she covers all you need to succeed online.

From A Happy Hostgator User

I learned the hard way that not all hosting services are equal. Poor quality hosting companies have cost me money since I started my online business.

As a work from home Online marketer I work to make his living online. I really can’t afford to have too much down time on any of my websites.

As an Internet marketer there not much more aggravating than working hard to send traffic to our web pages only to learn our site has been down for who knows how long. Grrr

When I started my online business in 2001 I tried numerous hosting services that made claims about their service that just weren’t true. However back then the biggest issue was cost, just too expensive for my small work from home business.

My search for a hosting service that would provide quality along with affordability and top support  continued until 2006 when I learned about HostGator.com. I have been happy with them since and it’s now Dec. 2011.

HostGator Tech Support Is Awesome

I originally used the word ‘great’ at the end of the above header but that didn’t really say what I feel about HostGator technical support team so I had to change it to ‘awesome’ because they are.

Since 2006 I have been hosting not only my own domains but I host most of my client’s there as well, from my reseller account.

HostGator Tech Support Is Just Full of Answers

I am not sure how many emails I sent off to HostGator at the beginning. A lot of dumb questions but I wanted to be certain I was at the right place. I’ am sure some of the tech staff thought I was nuts but they always remained polite and helpful.

The turn around time for support has always been within a few short hours, not so with many of the other services I’ve used over the years.

A Real Life HostGator Support Example

the happy hosting happy danceThis is a personal example of how HostGator had me doing The Happy Dance by making me a very happy client. I’ll try to be quick.

December 13, 2011

Just a couple of days ago I started my day as usual. I was adding content to my blogs. When I reached one of my top producing blogs something wasn’t right.

All was normal except where the blog posts were suppose to be., Instead of blog posts I saw NOT FOUND.

My heart moved right up into my throat and I quickly headed to the admin area where I found zero posts listed. I tried to figure out what the problem was but all I was doing was getting more stressed, so it was time to start a tech support ticket.

I paced my office floor and tried to work but my mind was going a mile a minute wondering what I would do if it was truly gone. Just about the time I was ready to jump out my office window I received a response.

BTW: My office window is about 5 feet off the ground. I was trying to be dramatic.

Support had been quick and solved the problem so when they responded to my support ticket they had already fixed the issue and my blog was back making me money again. Just so you know the problem was of my own creation, I just didn’t have a clue how to solve it.

I’ll tell you I gave support some great feedback after that.

Pros and Cons of HostGator.com

I don’t like giving reviews that are only positive. When I read reviews that don’t show the negative things I don’t trust the review much. However I have been with HostGator for almost 6 years now and have not had a single negative experience from them.

They are there when I need them but thankfully I have seldom needed them and when I have it’s always been a problem I brought on myself. Their service is top notch in this marketers books.

HostGator Is Extremely Reliable

HostGator keeps me happy. What does it take for a hosting company to make me happy? Well the three things listed below do the trick for me and my business.

  • Seldom Any Down Time
  • Affordable Hosting of Multiple Domains
  • Fast, Efficient Tech Support

HostGator Hosting Plans

Hostgator’s hosting plans have you covered no matter your needs. You can choose from hosting that will cover your needs even if you have a single website or multiple ones like I have. The bigger and better your site gets you’re covered.

  1. Hatchling Hosting Plan
  2. Baby Hosting Plan
  3. Business Hosting Plan
  4. Reseller Hosting Plan
  5. VPS Hosting Plan
  6. Dedicated Servers

Note: I love getting deals and again HostGator doesn’t disappoint. The key to getting even better pricing for your hosting needs is to pay for hosting for more than one year at a time.

In the years I’ve hosted my domains with HostGator hosting I have had almost zero downtime and I have many sites. So my personal experience with them tells me their claims of 99.9% uptime is accurate.

Work From Home Business – Dog Grooming

Time For Puppies First Grooming

Do you love dogs? Are you aware that dog grooming is a work at home business that’s really taking off. I guess we have a lot of dogs in our cities and towns. Here in Moncton I think we have at least one dog for every couple of families, while many have more than just one dog.

There are plenty of moms who would love the opportunity to be work from home moms so they could take care of their own kids instead of using day cares. I know my wife would have loved to work from home when Steve was little.

But before you just jump right into starting a dog grooming business from home you might want to know a few things.

  • First the size of your home will matter, especially if you will have more than one dog waiting to be groomed.
  • If you are in a neighbourhood like ours where too much noise is not acceptable you will need to keep the noise level down, so you may have to include some soundproofing.
  • You will need a good air conditioner for those hot summer months and of course if you live where the temperature drops in winter you will want a strong but safe heater.

Be Equipped With The Right Tools

Dog grooming does require some specific but basic tools and equipment before you’re ready to start your work from home business.

A few things you will need to be ready:

  • A separate room to groom in
  • A grooming table
  • A tub with a ramp
  • Grooming shears
  • Grooming scissors
  • Clippers
  • Hair accessories
  • Cages to hold waiting dogs

Start up costs will run you a few hundred dollars. You may also want to do a little decorating to make your K-9 clients happy.

I have a couple of female friends that groom dogs for friends but the funny thing is neither of them own a dog. They really know how to make a dog feel relaxed. If you don’t have this natural ability you need to learn a few things about handling a dog during grooming for your safety and that of the dog.

An excellent way to learn things is hands on by volunteering at a grooming shop near you.

Promoting Your Dog Grooming Business

Word of Mouth Advertising

I worked as a computer instructor for 20 years and never once advertised, other than by word of mouth advertising which is very powerful. You make someone very happy and charge a reasonable prices and they will tell people, especially their friends and family.

Word of mouth is so powerful it can also cause problems if you don’t do a good job. The reason for this is due to the fact people tend to tell more people when they’ve had a bad experience compared to how many they tell when they get the experience they expect.

Internet Marketing

Most businesses, whether it’s a work from home business or not should have a web presence. Let people know what you do and where you are. Be sure to include testimonials as they go a long way toward drawing more business.

I have people contacting me on a daily basis looking for links from my sites to their sites in order to gain more traffic.

You could hire someone like me to build your website or you could start a Dog Grooming blog. But my suggestion would be to have both. A static page that tells people what you do and shows some images of before and after. But it’s also good to have a blog to share daily experiences and maybe stories from happy customers.

Have a presence at the local Farmer’s market, if you have one. I have friends that have work from home businesses who actually hire people to sit at a booth in the farmer’s market because it works to get more business.

work from home market your businessMarketing your company, whether it’s a brick and mortar business on Main street or a work from home business at your kitchen table, will help you stand apart from all the other work-at-home professionals offering your services.

The better you market yourself and your business, the better you will attract targeted prospects and clientele, and in turn increase your profits.

12 Ways to Effectively Market Your Services

1. Set up a Professional Website

You must have an attractive, professional site that showcases your skills, talents, and service offerings. Use it to market yourself through search engines, discussion boards, reciprocal link exchanges, and other online activities. Include your contact information, your biography and credentials, and testimonials to make it easy for potential clients to reach you and see you as credible.

2. Set up an Online Portfolio

Create and maintain an online portfolio filled with examples of your work to show your clients proof of what you can do.

3. Create a Brochure

Use a brochure to project a professional image for yourself while explaining the services you provide in a printed format – many people still like hard copies of information. Make it easy to read and not too wordy, including answers to questions someone might have about your type of business. As with your website, include your contact information, target client, a list and description of your services, testimonials, your biography and credentials, and contact information.

4. Network with Local Businesses

Meeting with fellow businesspeople at local business networking events can help you improve your reputation as a serious businessperson, and can help you generate contracts for yourself from companies that are not necessarily looking for staff or new projects.

5. Network through Social Networks

Market yourself on social networking sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to increase exposure and awareness for your company and build valuable business and customer relationships. You’ll need to stay actively involved once you start, so join only a few groups specific to your industry and commit to participating in them regularly. Make sure to include a signature in your profiles that includes your website and contact details so your fellow members can find you online.

6. Research Your Prospective Clients

Learn as much as you can about a potential company before you make your first contact. It will help you find out if the client is a good fit for your services, and can help you make a sale later on.

7. Call Potential Clients

Market yourself by calling potential clients and making appointments to show them your service offerings.

8. Advertise in Local and Community Publications

Running your ad constantly in local publications will give you an image of reliability by making you consistently visible in your community, which will increase your chances of being hired when people are looking for services in your field.

9. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing can increase your sales, reach, awareness, branding, and return on investment by increasing the number of avenues advertising your product or services and allowing you to pay on a per-performance basis.

10. Use Blogging, Forums, Chat Rooms, and Social Media Marketing

Providing social media options on your website is a great way to build strong relationships and brand loyalty with your customers, as well as get feedback from them on suggestions you make or products you are promoting. They can help gain trust and encourage purchases when your audience finds them useful and informative. Use them to showcase your talent and expertise within your business.

11. Audio, Video, and Podcast Marketing

Use audio and video to increase your reach and visibility, provide valuable and beneficial added content, and communicate with your prospects more personally and regularly. Some people prefer to receive information in these formats, so these will strengthen your relationship with buyers and help build a community in your customers. You can also use podcasts to set yourself apart from your competition by distributing industry news and trends through them and in turn be seen as an expert in your industry.

12. Sweepstakes, Contests, and Giveaways

Generate buzz about your business by holding a contest and offering a giveaway. You can do it alone or with a partnering business. Just be sure to create a press release announcing the contest, and one to announce the winner.

You can make your business a winning one by putting these effective marketing tactics into practice. What are you waiting for?
