I have about a dozen sites going at any one time and market to a variety of niches which mostly revolve around my hobbies and interests.

I have turned my work from home idea into a full time thing now but must admit it wasn’t as easy as I had been led to believe.

Start With Niche Research

Start with niche research, now that’s sound advice. I seriously wonder at times just where I would be today if I had started my online business with a little research. A niche or market may seem good at a glance but once you start to evaluate it you may find it has way too much competition or exactly the opposite, no competition and no money.

Guessing isn’t going to make you money unless your guessing is really based on experience.

Research, the proper niche research, is so vital in a world of net savvy users who expect quality.

I Began Blogging About Things I Love To Do

Once I invested time researching niches in my areas of interest I started a fly fishing blog, two actually and on the same domain. Now I was blogging about something I actually know about, fly fishing and fly tying.

After a couple of months of posting informative and keyworded fly fishing related articles I monetized my fishing blog and started making a bit of money.

I did the same thing in the home garden niche and now have two blogs about gardening where I live and they make me money as well.

I find it so much easier to come up with quality content in niches I have a strong interest in. So today, if I were to hand out any advice about Internet marketing it would be to find something you love to talk about, but the niche you choose has to have people making money.

I had someone put it this way: “Think a year or two down the road. Will you still have something to say about the niche you’ve chosen.” It made me sit back and look at a few of the niches I was in. I was already struggling with a few that were only a few months old.

Are You Credible Enough For Me To Buy From?

I never thought about it much until I started evaluating my web site traffic.

One day it dawned on me that I don’t often buy from sites I’ve only just found. In the back of my mind I just don’t trust people. I will buy from sites where I have confidence in the site owner and that takes a bit of time and reading usually. Often more than 5 visits.

I have expectations when I am clicking search results links in Google. I expect quality and the info I need to make me want to buy, even if I am already in the mood to purchase. So many things can turn off potential customers you will never see again.

A few things that immediately turn me away:

• Lack of topic focus. Has every topic under the sun
• Content reads like it’s been over spun
• Too many distraction such as flashing banners and ads

Ask yourself this question when you are creating sites and content.

“Knowing there are many other great sites I can find, why would I want to stay on your site?”

It really comes down to knowing what you’re doing.

If you can’t be bothered creating quality for your visitors why should your visitors stick around? Make your readers happy and you stand to make some excellent money working from home.

The next time I was out of the house I stopped and bought a sign saying “Do Not Disturb, Genius At Work”. Just having that little sign on the door made a huge difference and I finally had a place that was quiet I could work and concentrate.

3. Schedule Your Work From Home Hours

I work from home full time and have the week ends to myself and family but during the week I like to get up early, with the birds, and get my online tasks completed before noon. Then the rest of the day is mine to do with as I please.

When I was working outside the home and didn’t get home until after 5 I worked on my online business at home late into the night. Working those late hours it was no wonder I made so many mistakes I would later have to back track to find and correct. Not efficient to work when you should be sleeping.

My suggestion is that anyone starting a work from home business should have a scheduled time to work their business. A routine tends to be easier to follow when it becomes a habit and changing the hours you work your business keeps that from happening and one tends to be less efficient.

4. Keep Your Work At Home Business Organized

This point is vital to one’s sanity. Well I feel like that when I allow things to become cluttered too much or I don’t keep track of everything I am doing.

This becomes really important the longer you’ve been working online because you may find you are duplicating things.

Once you have done the niche and keyword research you may have hundreds of keywords and phrases to write about but if you don’t learn how to use that research you’re going to be going in circles.

5. Take It One Step At A Time

My biggest problem and one I had a hard time getting under control was taking on too much at one time. My thinking was that I would make more money but in reality I was just spinning my wheels and making myself confused.

It actually slowed me down so much I think I started going backwards. Well it started feeling that way as I had to work harder and longer just to keep up. So my most valuable advice to those starting out with online marketing would be to take it slow and steady, one step at a time and you will succeed much sooner, with less backtracking and frustration.

In Conclusion, these points may seem pretty basic and that’s because they are basic. If you miss the basics you’ll be struggling until you get it all straight in your head.

Friday 13th, February 2004

Just after supper on Friday 13th I headed to my office to do a little more work before calling it a day, as usual but shortly after sitting down one of my teeth started hurting.

I thought it was time for a trip to the dentist but after a while the pain started moving towards my back and down my spine. Quite uncomfortable.

Eventually it got bad enough we took a trip to the hospital. Good thing because what started as a pain in my tooth was actually me having my first heart attack.

That’s when my happy go lucky life took a sharp turn for the worse. I was immediately as weak as a new born baby. To make it even worse they would no longer allow me to drive my car.

That was back in 2004 and things haven’t gotten a whole lot better since.

Energy Reserves At A Minimum

Some of the things that have happened since having my heart attack are:

1. I am tired all day long.
2. I don’t sleep well at all.
3. My energy level is always low and disappears quickly.
4. The medication I take has somehow activated my diabetes gene meaning I now have to take even more medication.
5. The meds dry my skin and now I have eczema.
6. I also get hives that make me want to scratch my skin off.

There are more things but I am sure you get the point. I am tired of being tired, no energy and itchy.

Will Melaleuca Save The Day?

I am an online marketer and I work from home, good thing cause I probably won’t be able to hold down a job. Anyways I was chatting with another online marketer, Keith, and eager to look at one of his offerings.

Shortly after I signed up to his website Keith called me about his online business. I really only wanted to work through the email as I really detest talking on the phone, so I almost said I wasn’t interested.

The work from home small business idea I’d like to share today is right up my alley of hobbies and interest.

I’m talking about fly tying, the art of tying artificial flies for the sport of fly fishing. It’s something I have been doing for more than 30 years now.

Jenny and I like to go for breakfast at Hyne’s  Restaurant on Mountain Road Saturday mornings before starting our day. It’s just a 5 minute walk from our house so if it’s not raining too hard or a blizzard we get there.

It’s really quite simple. When I am talking fishing I always include New Brunswick Canada or Moncton, New Brunswick to attract local readers.

That one tip is worth it’s weight in gold but it’s only one tip. There are tons of things that will help you make money working from home.

A lot of frustrated marketers out there who are making no money might disagree with me when I say it’s easy to work from home and make money online.

So maybe I better qualify that statement before you leave my page.

You probably do a lot of things in life that are easy NOW. However at one point in your life you had to learn those things before they became easy. It’s the same with the work at home business opportunity.

I have a few scars that remind that riding a bike wasn’t easy at the beginning.

Work at home online income is the same. You could get all banged up trying to learn on your own but you can learn much faster learning from someone who already has it mastered.

Be aware of the hype. Many people have no problem stretching the truth or exaggerating facts to suck in the newbie marketers who find their sites.

These people tend to hype all their claims and like to promise work at home income amounts you will earn.

Really, it’s never that simple.

Don’t be sucked in. The truth of the matter is no one can accurately predict what you will learn which will have a lot to do with how much you’ll earn online.

There are just too many variable to make claims like that, so run when you see it.

Don’t Carry All Your Eggs In One Basket

This is a life lesson but also a good strategy for those who wish to work at home and make a living online.

I started my work at home business 10 years ago and almost immediately found an affiliate program I could make money with. I hadn’t really learned anything. I just stumbled across this and it made me money.

So I didn’t bother learning anything or doing anything else. I just kept cashing my checks and enjoying the income.

Then one month the check didn’t show up. I waited for about a week and then I contacted the affiliate program owner. Well I tried to but no response.

I never got another check and was never able to track the guy down. My business income just stopped and I was left frustrated and angry.

I was back to square one and spent the next year fumbling around trying to get lucky again. It never happened and eventually I made the decision to learn online marketing.

Today I have many sources of income, all online and even today, every once in a while one of the programs I belong to folds up shop and disappears.

Don’t let that be your only source of income. Don’t carry all your eggs in one basket.

Invest Your Time And Money Wisely

There are two ways to learn work at home success. 1) The free method which tends to take longer and usually means you don’t have any one for support. 2) Investing some money toward your success.

There are many places to learn free but usually you will not find all you need to know in one place which can be confusing. Some of these places will not give you all you need without the need to purchase something.

When you pay for your education you will most likely have access to a support service and forums where you can learn faster.

I started learning the free way but kept running into walls the free methods left out. Eventually I purchases some ebooks that showed me what I needed to know.
