Those that work for small organizations or groups are normally given various medical insurance choices by the company they work for. The insurance covers pretty much everything, from visits to the physician to prescriptions to emergency room trips, etc.

Indemnity plans – These main insurance plans usually have a deductible. The insurance company will start to pay the benefits after the deductible has been met. These plans typically offer the greatest flexibility in selecting where to get health care.

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization plans – This type of self employed health insurance plans generally allows the insured individual to decide on a PCP (Primary Care Physician) from a directory of network providers. The primary care physician is in charge of handling the health care of the insured person. If the covered person is in need of special care from a provider not in the network, they usually need to get a referral directly from their primary care physician.

The person insured should get treatment from a network provider in order to receive payment from the HMO.

PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization plan – This kind of coverage is characterized by the provider making a contract with specific physicians and medical facilities to give treatment at reduced prices. If you are a PPO member, you can get health care from a facility or physician outside of your network, but a copayment, or larger deductible, will be required.

POS, or Point of Service plan – This coverage gives a combination of a PPO and a HMO, only this one is more adaptable than a HMO, but does need you to decide on a primary care physician. Similar to PPO, you can get medical attention from a facility or doctor outside of your network, but it is going to cost you more. Then again, if a primary care doctor recommends you, the cost should be covered.
